Description The SG-43 Goryunov was a Soviet medium machine gun introduced in 1943 to replace the ageing Maxim M1910. Chambered for the 7.62×54mmR cartridge, it was gas-operated, air-cooled, and belt-fed, with a rate of fire between 500–700 rounds per minute. Designed by P.M. Goryunov, it was mounted on a wheeled carriage or tripod and often fitted with a gun shield for infantry use. Although lighter than the Maxim, the complete system still weighed over 40 kg, limiting mobility. The SG-43 proved reliable and robust, with a quick-change barrel and a dense, chrome-lined bore that allowed for sustained fire. It was widely issued from 1944 onwards and saw action in major late-war offensives, including the push into Germany. While it lacked the versatility of general-purpose machine guns, it was a significant improvement in terms of production efficiency and battlefield performance. The SG-43 remained in Soviet and allied service well into the post-war decade.
