Infantry rifle squad 4 (Polish)

Description Infantry rifle squads of the Polish People’s Army during the Second World War were organised along Soviet lines, reflecting the Red Army’s influence on training and equipment. Formed in 1943, these squads typically consisted of around nine to twelve soldiers, led by a squad leader. Their primary weapon was the Mosin–Nagant bolt‑action rifle, supplemented by submachine guns such as the PPSh‑41 for close combat. Light machine guns, usually the DP‑27, provided suppressive fire, while grenades and occasionally light mortars added flexibility. Squads were trained to operate as part of larger platoons, coordinating closely with artillery and armour. Discipline and political oversight were emphasised, with commissars ensuring loyalty to Soviet doctrine. In combat across Belarus, Poland, and Germany, rifle squads formed the backbone of infantry operations, engaging in assaults, defence, and urban fighting. Despite limited autonomy, they were essential to the Polish People’s Army’s contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany.
