Sniper – sitting (Polish)

Description Snipers in the Polish People’s Army during the Second World War played an important role in supporting infantry operations on the Eastern Front. Formed under Soviet command in 1943, the army adopted Soviet doctrine and equipment, which included the use of sniper rifles such as the Mosin–Nagant fitted with optical sights. Polish snipers were trained to operate independently or in pairs, targeting enemy officers, machine‑gun crews, and observers to disrupt German formations. Their skill in concealment and precision shooting made them valuable assets during battles in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and the final advance into Germany. Snipers also provided reconnaissance, reporting enemy movements while remaining hidden. Although their numbers were limited, their psychological impact on enemy troops was significant. For the Polish People’s Army, snipers symbolised the integration of Soviet tactics and contributed to the effectiveness of infantry units in both defensive and offensive operations during the later stages of the war.
