Army Bazooka team – firing – (US)

Description During World War II, the U.S. Army introduced the bazooka, a revolutionary man-portable, recoilless anti-tank rocket launcher. First deployed in 1942, it provided infantry with a powerful weapon capable of penetrating enemy armour, particularly German tanks. The bazooka fired high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) shaped charge warheads, allowing soldiers to engage armoured vehicles, bunkers, and machine gun nests from a safe distance. The early M1 Bazooka was effective but had reliability issues. It was soon improved with the M1A1, which featured a simplified design and better ammunition. Later models, such as the M9 and M9A1, increased range and penetration power, making them more effective against heavily armoured German tanks. However, the Germans quickly adapted, developing their own version, the Panzerschreck, based on captured bazookas. Bazookas played a crucial role in battles across Europe and the Pacific, particularly in urban combat and defensive operations. Despite their effectiveness, they had limitations, including a visible backblast that exposed the shooter’s position.
