Forward Observer team (French)

Description During World War II, the role of artillery observers was crucial for the success of Allied operations. Artillery observers, also known as forward observers, were soldiers who directed artillery and mortar fire support onto enemy targets. They usually accompanied tank or infantry units and ensured that indirect fire hit targets that those at a fire support base could not see. The French army had its own artillery observers, who served in various units and formations throughout the war. Some of them fought in the Battle of France in 1940, where they faced the superior German artillery system. Others joined the Free French Forces and fought alongside the British and American armies in North Africa, Italy, and France. They also participated in special operations, such as the raids on Dieppe and Saint-Nazaire. One of the most notable achievements of the French artillery observers was their contribution to the liberation of Paris in August 1944. They coordinated the fire support of the French 2nd Armored Division and the 4th US Infantry Division, which entered the city from different directions. They also helped to suppress the German resistance in key locations, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Invalides, and the Montparnasse railway station.
