DShK HMG – firing (Soviet)

Description The Soviet DShK 12.7mm heavy machine gun, introduced in 1938, served as a powerful infantry support and anti-aircraft weapon during the Second World War. Designed by Degtyaryov and improved by Shpagin, it featured a belt-fed, gas-operated system firing the 12.7×108mm cartridge. Though originally intended for anti-aircraft use, the DShK was also deployed by infantry on a wheeled mount with an armoured shield, weighing over 150 kg in total. Its high rate of fire (600 rounds per minute) and ability to penetrate light armour made it effective against vehicles and low-flying aircraft. However, its bulk and weight limited mobility, making it more suitable for static defence or vehicle mounting. Despite these drawbacks, it was valued for its reliability and firepower, especially in urban and fortified settings. By 1944, production increased significantly, and the DShK became a staple of Soviet firepower, remaining in service long after the war ended.
